Farm St: Good to Know

CIRCUIT RESET

If multiple lights and/or outlets go out in your apt all at once, you probably had too many things using electric at the same time. It could be a toaster, hair dryer, coffee maker, microwave, space heater, or AC are plugged into the same circuit and some were being used and then the fridge motor kicked on. Notice what appliances were being used when the electric went off, and try to avoid having those all of those appliances on at the same time again. There are a couple ways you might be able to get it back on quickly:

  1. Look for the GFI (aka GFCI) outlets in your kitchen and bathroom. Press the GFI reset button on the outlets just in case whatever lost power (could be a ceiling light or something plugged into an outlet) is on that circuit and the GFI tripped. GFI outlet reset buttons can be hard to press with just fingers. If the reset button is popped out, try unplugging the item that is plugged into the outlet and use the metal plug to press the reset button in.
  2. If there is no GFI outlet involved, go to the basement and reset your breaker with an orange band. Just flip that one circuit to one side, and then back to it’s original position. That’s it. Please watch the video and follow the instructions carefully.

TRASH AND RECYCLING

Trash is picked up weekly very early Monday morning, so you’ll want to set your tagged trash out Sunday night and bring the trash cans back in by Monday evening. Recycling is picked up every other week. There is a trash can and recycling bin for each apt behind the house. Please keep your trash can and recycling bin organized. Read more info on trash and recycling here.

TRASH DISPOSAL IN ITHACA

The City of Ithaca requires residents to use trash tags for garbage collection. One tag is required for each trash can or plastic bag that is placed at the curb. If more than 1 bag of trash is put in a trash can, be sure the weight of the can does not exceed the weight on the tag (usually 70 pounds). These tags can be purchased at various local stores or online. The tag must be placed around the neck of the bag or on the bag itself. Trash cans must have the tag wrapped around the handle for easy access. It’s important to ensure that your trash is properly tagged to avoid any collection issues. You can find more information on city trash pickup here.

PARKING

There is free street parking available near the house. November 1 – April 1 in the past there has been odd-even parking enforced. It may be suspended now. Make sure you know the rules. You can sign up to receive texts about parking situations that may affect you.
